Introduction

These are movies of various NES-games being played extraordinarily using an emulator as a tool to get over humanly limits such as "skill" and "reaction".
More information available at the purpose page to help getting the idea.

Please read the purpose-section and the how these were done-section before you write that usual post about "those were already proven faked" (every bb has one of those bigmouths).

Note that you need Bittorrent (this link leads to its homepage) to download these videos.

completed as fast as possible by Sjoerd Henstra.

Addams Family (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)42 MB15:2814:46walkerboh7-addamsfamily.fmv (Apr 26 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Hans Olsson (aka. Walker Boh).
This timeattack is about Addams Family, but not the Fester's Quest one.

This is really the seventh version, and the first published version.

Note: This movie may not look cool, but the player is not to be blamed. The game is a little bad. You have to avoid objects by afar if you don't want to get hit, and you really have to collect $1M to complete the game.

In my opinion Hans has done very good job perfecting this movie.

Akumajou Densetsu (Castlevania 3) (Japan)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)78 MB29:0125:56genisto-alucard-akuden.fmv (Apr 7 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Jean-François Durocher (aka. Genisto).
This is the story of Dracula's curse from the times before the first Castlevania game.
The original name of the game is 悪魔城伝説.

Technically, this game has a really high quality soundtrack - mostly because it uses a VRC6 chip that the Nintendo of America considered too expensive to include in the game cart.
That's why the movie was made for the Japanese version instead of the USA version.
(No, it still isn't SNES quality yet - don't be disappointed.)

This movie is interesting, because the game is complex and difficult and the soundtrack is good.

Akumajou Densetsu (Castlevania 3) (Japan)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)82 MB31:4428:33phil-akuden.fmv (Apr 7 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Phil Côté.
This is the story of Dracula's curse from the times before the first Castlevania game.
The original name of the game is 悪魔城伝説.

This movie is interesting, because the game is complex and difficult and the soundtrack is good.

This movie features the Sypha path, which is 2:37 slower than the Alucard path played by Genisto.

Akumajou Special - Boku Dracula-kun (Japan)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)60 MB22:5420:42phil,genisto-draculakun.fmv (May 14 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Phil Côté and Jean-François Durocher (aka. Genisto).
For the fans of the Castlevania serie - here's a timeattack of a Castlevania game that is hmm.. much much more aimed to children than the darker themed games. The game was only released in Japan.
A bit disappointment as a game.

Arkanoid (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)43 MB17:0116:31genisto-arkanoid.fmv (Apr 21 2004)
completed almost as fast as possible by Jean-François Durocher (aka. Genisto).
This is an incredible timeattack of Arkanoid made by Genisto, comparable to Morimoto's Gradius movie.

No ball is ever lost, despite that three balls are juggled in almost all levels.

Astyanax (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)72 MB23:3120:12walkerboh-astyanax.fmv (May 31 2004)

Atlantis no Nazo (Japan)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)10 MB3:082:46atla.fmv (May 8 2003)
completed as fast as possible by Morimoto.
In western countries I guess nobody knows this game.
This game seems to have obscure secrets similar to Zelda.

Nazo = riddle, puzzle.

(Original filename: アトランチス完全版.fmv)

Batman (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)31 MB12:1310:18linnom3-batman.fmv (Apr 14 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Bruno S.G. (aka. Linnom).
The hero of Gotham City goes against the villain of Gotham City.
His fists are more powerful than any weapon in the world, but he rarely kills anyone. It's not like his enemies can hurt him anyway. After all, he's the hero, and heroes are supposed to be invincible.

This movie is very good - Linnom clearly is very good at this game.
This is 152 seconds faster than his previously released version and 72 seconds faster than Bisqwit's version which was mentioned here earlier.

The soundtrack and graphics of this game are also quite good.

Uses no cheats. (But please remember how these movies are made.)

Battle of Olympus (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)62 MB24:5623:45jackic3-olympus.fmv (Jun 1 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Manuel García López (aka. Jackic).
Battle of Olympus (オリュンポスの戦い) improved by 2:06 again.

The author calls this version "final", but because of the somewhat boring looking olive collecting scene near the beginning of the movie, I doubt this will be the final version.

Battletoads (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)140 MB (urgh)20:2319:19phil,genisto-battletoads.fmv (Apr 30 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Phil Côté and Jean-François Durocher (aka. Genisto).
This is a two-player timeattack on this game that is said to be quite hard.

Note that the second player dies at some point. This is because of a bug in the game: the beta testers probably never got that far in the game with two players. Thanks to "Cyntalan Maelstrom" for this information.

Graphically this game features some really nice scenes.

This is a 1-player warpless Battletoads timeattack on this hard game.

Blaster Master (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)112 MB45:5243:57devinc2-blasmast.fmv (May 21 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Devin Coldewey.
A long game done quick.

Ps: Because I didn't have a ROM of the USA version of this game, I used a prepatched Chinese translation to record the movie. But the game is still the same - nothing changed but text.

Blue Shadow (Europe)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)36 MB14:1811:36exim-blueshadow.fmv (Mar 11 2004)
(also known as The Shadow of the Ninja) completed as fast as possible by Peter Bucher (aka. Exim).
In this game, jumping and slashing is faster than regular running.
This timeattack looks quite good.

Ps: Europe uses PAL which is 50 Hz - USA uses NTSC which is 60 Hz. Famtasia supports only NTSC.
PAL games played in an NTSC system play 16.7% too fast. Multiply the time by 120% to get a comparable measure to the USA version.

Blues Brothers (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)42 MB5:585:36teowind-bluesbros.fmv (May 6 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Niklas Torstensson (aka. Teowind).
This game is really fast-paced. Do a timeattack on it, and... see yourself :)

Bubble Bobble (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)55 MB27:4427:20tarzan2-bubblebobble-2p-alone.fmv (Apr 20 2004)
happy ending as fast as possible by Mattias Berggren (aka. Tarzan).
This movie features one player controlling two characters simultaneously.

Despite the movie being so long, it's nearly the fastest possible warpless time through Bubble Bobble. There are over 100 levels, and each level ends with 10.75 seconds of unskippable time.

Castlevania (USA PRG1)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)37 MB13:0811:43genisto-castleva.fmv (Apr 28 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Phil Côté and Jean-François Durocher (aka. Genisto).
This is Genisto's and Phil's joint effort at Castlevania - 26 seconds faster than the previous version by Bisqwit. Also features a higher final score.

As the author of the previous version, I can tell how this improvement was achieved:
- Better selection of items
- Using the character as a critical hit weapon in bosses
- Approaching bats from front, not back
Plus many minor optimizations that sum to a few seconds.

Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)31 MB11:2810:36Sleepz-chipdale-doped-dale.fmv (Mar 12 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Richard U (aka. Sleepz).
This is a curious two-player timeattack: Only Chip is playing. He's carrying Dale with him.

A funny idea and a quite well done timeattack movie.
This is the first timeattack movie with two players.

Here's another Chip carries Dale -movie.

Circus Charlie (Japan/any)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)10 MB3:343:25phil2-circusc.fmv (May 30 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Phil Côté and Jean-François Durocher (aka. Genisto).
Circus Charlie is a simple game that most people probably know from pirate multigame carts. The first stages are easy to beat perfectly for anyone even on real NES, but stage 3 is already quite challenging.

This movie plays "1 player game A" (easy).

Stage times: 3410, 3560 , 3750 , 3890 , 4270

This version is several seconds faster than the previous version by Walker Boh and also several frames faster than Walker Boh's unreleased improved version.

Cobra Triangle (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)46 MB19:4517:55walkerboh2-cobratriangle.fmv (May 20 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Hans Olsson (aka. Walker Boh).

Contra (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)32 MB11:5110:07qcommand-contra.fmv (Jun 7 2004)
completed as fast as possible by "qcommand".
Trivia: This game was released as Probotector in Europe with slightly modified graphics. It is also known as GryZor on some other systems.

It's the guy who has infinite supply of ammo and who destroys worlds barechested.

This Contra movie is 8 seconds faster than Genisto's version, which was here earlier, and shoots much less.

Darkwing Duck (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)38 MB13:3212:33walkerboh4-dwduck.fmv (May 30 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Hans Olsson (aka. Walker Boh).
Fourth release of Darkwing Duck timeattacks - this version by Walker Boh again.
This is 18 seconds faster than the previous version by Frenom.

Double Dragon (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)23 MB10:039:35phil4-doubledragon.fmv (May 19 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Phil Côté.
51 seconds faster than version 3.

Double Dragon II (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)38 MB15:2213:27phil-doubledragon2-2p-alone.fmv (Apr 10 2004)
completed almost as fast as possible by Phil Côté.
This is a two-player timeattack at Double Dragon II - but here's what's curious: there's only one player - controlling both characters!
That's really hard to do.

This is not a perfect timeattack. To make it perfect would require using the "flying knees" technique almost all the time, and it would be somewhat boring to watch. This movie uses different techniques more.

Double Dragon III (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)28 MB12:2511:15phil2-doubledragon3.fmv (Jun 10 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Phil Côté.
Improved version - by 2:50!

Dragon Warrior (USA PRG1)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)96 MB29:1226:59genisto-dragonwarrior.fmv (May 2 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Jean-François Durocher (aka. Genisto).
Selected notes from the author:
Beat the game at Level 9.
Leveling up doesn't take so long... less than 3 minutes.
Avoid all the enemies that aren't useful to kill.
The final boss (Dragonlord) may be a little long to beat, but it's the fastest way to get through the quest.
It appears to be a David Vs Goliath fight.

Duck Tales (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)21 MB8:308:14genisto-dtales.fmv (Mar 14 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Jean-François Durocher (aka. Genisto).
The second timeattack video on Duck Tales at difficult level, 11 seconds faster than the previous version by Blublu.

Duck Tales 2 (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)31 MB11:369:01genisto-dtales2.fmv (Mar 22 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Jean-François Durocher (aka. Genisto).
This is Genisto's timeattack movie on Duck Tales 2, 41 seconds faster than the previous version by Exim.
Quote from Exim (for his movie, but applies to this as well):
"This one has the "bad" end. (not the worst)
There're 3 endings: no money earned; earned some money and found all 7 map pieces.
I'm thinking about doing the best end but i don't know if this would be interesting because I'd have to visit some places twice and it would be a lot longer."

Excitebike (Japan/USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)2.8 MB1:09N/Aplayer1-excitebike.fmv (May 3 2004)
Track 1 completed as fast as possible by Arto Järvelä (aka. Player1).
This movie plays the first track of Excitebike really fast.

Track 1 completed in 00:42.43.

Flintstones (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)

Friday the 13th (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)8 MB3:343:17phil2-friday13th.fmv (Apr 18 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Phil Côté.
Some people have been requesting a timeattack on this game, so here it is.

This version is 53 seconds faster than the previous version.

Selected notes from the author: The game with the most randomness I have ever seen. Each game have a different starting location for the player and even Jason Voorhees himself.

Ghosts and Goblins (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)25 MB9:018:53jeffc7-ghostsng.fmv (May 7 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Jeff C (aka. Arc).
This is the seventh improved (by 14 seconds) version of Jeff C's timeattack on this hard game.

This game is known as Makaimura in Japan.

Goonies (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)6 MB3:082:35phil2-goonies.fmv (Jun 11 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Phil Côté and Jean-François Durocher (aka. Genisto).
Not many have seen this game, and those who have, do know that it's a small game. An average speedrun might achieve a time such as 6 minutes or something. A 5 minute record is an excellent time for speedruns of this game, but requires a lot of luck.
But here we have a movie that is 50% faster than the previous version! Phil had a hard competition with WalkerBoh, and this is finally the result.

Goonies 2 (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)49 MB18:2317:21walkerboh2-goonies2.fmv (May 20 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Hans Olsson (aka. Walker Boh).
31 seconds faster than the previous version, almost exclusively because of faster control of the menus. Never underestimate minor optimizations :)

GradiusSizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)33 MB14:3614:12gradius.fmv (May 7 2003)
completed with only speed upgrades by Morimoto.
Morimoto picks only "Speed" upgrades and has fun with perfect reflexes. That's certainly something nice to do, because the game scrolls automatically and the player can't affect the speed.

Please refer to the reality check section if you are wondering how this has been played.

(Original filename: グラディウス.fmv)

Gremlins 2 (unknown version)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)25 MB9:327:55Sleepz-Gremlins2.fmv (Mar 10 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Richard U (aka. Sleepz).
Umm. It's Gremlins 2 done quick.
This movie involves more jumping than your average Super Mario game, but the author says it's only to make the movie more interesting/exciting.

Falls into a pit once on purpose.

The author is quite certain that this is the fastest possible runthrough on this game.

Hi no Tori - Houou Hen - Gaou no Bouken (Japan)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)

Despite the fact that this is a Konami game, I guess this game is not much known in western countries.
This game is really quite difficult.

火の鳥 = bird of fire (Japanese name for phoenix)

Hitler no Fukkatsu (Japan)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)45 MB16:3014:06genisto-hitlernf.fmv (May 30 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Jean-François Durocher (aka. Genisto).
This is a timeattack at ヒットラーの復活, which is the original (Japanese) version of Bionic Commando.

This is a platform game with a hero that can't jump.
This movie is 3 minutes and 6 seconds faster than the movie of the previous author, Feitclub. It looks really great.

Note: Hitler no Fukkatsu and Bionic Commando are not the same game. Selected quotes from Feitclub: Major differences include:
-"HnF" has more enemies in every stage, and more obstacles along the way. For example, there are land mines in Area 7 and giant spiders in some neutral areas. Also, I believe the patterns of the enemy attack trucks is different, because I seemed to encounter them more often in this game despite using the same route as "BC."
-All references to Nazis and all swastikas were removed from "BC." The evil leader of "the Badds" was re-named "Master-D." Graphically, however, he is undeniably Adolf Hitler in both versions. This resulted in quite a shock to me as a child!

Hudson's Adventure Island 3 (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)68 MB27:3225:28phil-aisland3.fmv (Mar 22 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Phil Côté.
The Adventure Island game series are fun to play, but they are a little boring to watch. However if you have half an hour of free time, shut down your brain and watch this carefree timeattack. :)

Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)59 MB20:2817:39jeffc3-jackiechan.fmv (Apr 10 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Jeff C (aka. Arc).
This is an improvement to the previous version - 68 seconds faster.

This game has a quite functional soundtrack.
The timeattack might be a little long, but it's almost flawless and quite relaxing to watch and listen.

Selected comments from the author:
I don't know if you have played it but it's similiar to Batman.. Kinda. But the guy is the worlds most elite head-banger ;P.

Kage no Densetsu (Japan)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)

Legend of Kage (影の伝説).

This is really the umphteenth version of the timeattack. Fast completion of this game relies heavily on random factors, and thus it has been a lot of work to get the time down from 8 minutes to the 6 minutes we see here.

This movie rescues the o-hime-sama four times, at all the four seasons of year, in just 6:05. Lots of ninja-slaughter follows.

The sound emulation in Famtasia doesn't appear to be perfect in this game, but it's the best I've heard.

Download (.avi via BitTorrent)31 MB11:2910:00mikecs2-karnov.fmv (Jun 11 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Mike Steinfield.
Karnov is one of those games whose famousness defies my logic.
The game is similar to Ghosts'n Goblins. Both look a little badly programmed.

This is an improved version by one minute.

When I started, I had no idea how long this game is. I know now - it's very long. :)
Despite the length, this movie is very fast-paced and the game should be varying enough to keep a timeattack movie fan interested the whole three quarter hours.

Kung Fu (USA)SizeMovie lengthPlay lengthfmv (the Famtasia recording file)
Download (.avi via BitTorrent)10 MB4:113:43phil-kungfu.fmv (Mar 31 2004)
completed as fast as possible by Phil Côté and Jean-François Durocher (aka. Genisto).
Kung Fu is perhaps not very interesting to watch, but there has been a lot of competition at it. The records in this game have gained more speed, timeunit by timeunit, as a couple of timeattack authors have competed on it.

The completion times for each floor in this movie are: 1547, 1557, 1551, 1545, 1549. It is 38 timeunits faster than Michael Fried's previously published version and 4 timeunits faster than Deviance's last known record.

Legend of Zelda (ゼルダの伝説) is an adventure game that easily takes you days to beat.
Its world is so huge and full of obscure secrets that without great deal of planning you won't make it in less than many hours.

This movie was planned together by many masterminds at the nesvideos forum - primarily Michael Fried, Ramzi and Sleepz.
We were aiming for a sub-30 minutes movie, then for a sub-29 minutes movie. I decided to publish anything that goes under 28 minutes. And here we are, under 27 minutes - 4:33 faster than the previous version!

The Up+A trick (save and restart) was used in this movie several times. It was judged to be acceptable because it's mentioned in the instruction booklet of the game, and is a part of normal playing.

This video is certainly quite a surprise to anyone who has used hours and hours exploring the Hyrule world. :)

I was working hard trying various ways to perfect Maniac Mansion with the meteor police route (best attempt was 9:40), when I discovered a glitch that made the route obsolete. :-) :-(

This well-known glitch involves pausing the game during a scene that would normally lead you being captured by Edna.

There was no time for the hamster in this route, so Jeff also included a different movie that completes the game in 10:06 and has the hamster scenes - nuking it in the microwave and also giving it back to Ed. You can download it here (FMV only).

This game has crazy musics.

Selected notes from author:
Sliding is really annoying in MM6 because you can't jump straight out of a slide, but I have done my best while holding on to my sanity (the large amount of rerecordings is mostly due to optimization of slides).
Also the Rush Jet Adaptor is a horrible, but unfortunately a necessary tool. You can't slide when using it, which is why I keep the parts where I use the jet short.

Warp initially selected this game because he thought the game is easy... well, it's not :)

Ps: This is a PAL game played on an NTSC system. It plays 16.7% too fast. Warp didn't play the timeattack on purpose with this version to get a faster time, he just didn't know back then about the difference.

completed as fast as possible by Joel Yliluoma (aka. Bisqwit).
This is the story of Simon Belmont's horrible weekend without sleep.

Even though this movie is quite long, it's nearly the fastest possible walkthrough of this game. I (Bisqwit) estimate about 15 seconds of possible improvement, but after banging my head against the desk (virtually) so many times while trying to create the improved version, I decided to cancel it.
The timeunit count for this movie is 3:15:11.

There are several items that are required for the completion of the game, and you can't buy them without killing a certain amount of monsters, thus this movie has quite much of running back and forth, collecting hearts.

There are a few very impressive glitches in this game - using them could cut the time down significantly - but unfortunately performing them is nearly impossible (but demonstratedly possible).

This timeattack exceptionally contains one death. It was intentional to save time.

Perfect doesn't mean unbeatable indeed!

4-2 was improved because of a better route and 8-4 was completed with 315 timeunits left. Doesn't lack action either.

It's sort of an improved hybrid of those two movies.

List of ideas

If you want to attempt a "perfect NES play" yourself, here are some suggestions, based on what people have asked: If you want to see a movie of a game not on this list, start making it yourself! Just requesting it to this list doesn't make it happen.

Before you begin playing, be sure you have read the purpose and guidelines for this video collection.
It might also be a good idea to tell about your plans at the nesvideos forum (please don't post movie requests there).

Btw, you can find comments on all tool-assisted runs Morimoto has published, at his emu movie page at やるき茄子 (yarukinasu, japanese only).

If you are looking for a video not on this page and not in the above list, be sure to check the sites listed in the links section.
